Agan Tavas, The Campaign for the Cornish Language, welcomes the request of Cornwall Council to the Department of Transport for Cornish as well as the usual name on road signs. This would only be applied when a sign is due for replacement.
The late Craig Weatherhill. Craig, before his death, was considered by many to be the foremost expert on Cornish place-names. Agan Tavas regards his book; ‘A Concise Dictionary of Cornish Place-Names’ ISBN 978-1-904808-22-0 as the bench mark for any work on bilingual signs. This will ensure that the history of our place-names is preserved. In accordance with Craig’s work, we maintain that names coined in the 19th century, after the native language died out, should not be translated. Also, names of Norman French origin, and there are a few, should retain their historical roots.
Bilingual signs present an opportunity to inform those interested about the historical origin of Cornish place-names and Agan Tavas welcomes this.
